How Much Cash Should a High Earner Keep?

In brief, the right cash reserve is not a fixed multiple for everyone. A partner with variable drawings, a business owner and an employee with stable income may need very different levels of liquidity.

Give each part of cash a job

Separate immediate spending, emergency reserves, known commitments and long-term capital. This prevents money needed for a house deposit, school fees or tax payment from being exposed to inappropriate investment risk.

Factors that change the reserve

  • Income stability and bonus variability.
  • Essential monthly expenditure and debt commitments.
  • Job concentration and employability.
  • Upcoming property, education or business costs.
  • Self-assessment and other tax liabilities.
  • Insurance and access to borrowing.
  • Tolerance for selling investments during a market fall.

Consider tax and protection

Interest outside tax wrappers may be taxable. The personal savings allowance depends on tax status and additional-rate taxpayers do not receive one. Deposit protection, banking-group limits, notice periods and counterparty concentration also matter.

When cash becomes excessive

Cash can provide certainty, but long holding periods expose purchasing power to inflation and may prevent capital supporting long-term objectives. “Excess” cash is the amount beyond credible short- and medium-term needs—not simply anything above an arbitrary number.

Create a cash ladder

A practical structure can combine instant-access cash, notice or fixed-term deposits aligned to known dates and long-term investments for money not expected to be required for several years. Suitability depends on circumstances and rates change.
