Are you a landlord? If so, do you know that it is now your responsibility to check that your tenant is entitled to be in the UK? If you fail to comply, you could face a fine of up to £3,300 so it's important to keep up to date as the new scheme rolls out.
This new obligation is the result of the Immigration Act 2014. Having taken steps to enforce what it believes to be a popular policy on migration and immigration status, the Government has imposed another administrative burden on landlords. It is not yet known quite how the new arrangements will work although the Government has given assurances that the process will be straightforward.
It should be possible to comply without too much difficulty by the landlord seeking consent from the Home Office and we are assured that checks will be piloted and properly assessed before they are applied across the UK.
